God looks at the heart – Keeping your heart with all diligence

The heart is physically an organ we know to pump blood to every part of the body as we have learnt through science. However, in spiritual context, the heart of a person is where decisions come from, it is the life of a person. Any decision that a man makes, which may make him a success or a failure, which is pleasing to God or not, all come from the authority of the heart.

The heart of a man must be guided and well informed since it is such an important entity in the life of any person. It is only wise that we watch what goes into our hearts in order to predict what will come out of it.

In the book of Proverbs, there is a strong revelation that is made about the heart of a man, it says:

“For as he thinks in his heart, so is he.”

  • Proverbs 23:7a NKJV

Whatever or however we think in our hearts, automatically has a say on how we act out in the physical. People may not be able to know what principles and systems of thinking you have subscribed to in your heart, but when you begin to act them out, we know that which you have held in your heart in high esteem.

It is therefore important to keep a strong watch over this heart of yours, if you want it to obey the things of God and not fly on auto-pilot. The book of Proverbs says:

“Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it spring the issues of life.”

  • Proverbs 4:23 NKJV

There are issues of life, and they can make or break a man. It all depends on what we have filled our hearts with before the time when we are tested with these issues. If our hearts are filled with the faith that comes from the Word of God, then we sustain the power to overcome, but if our hearts are filled with stories and vain knowledge of what “we” think life should be and not what God has spoken, then we will definitely fail when these times arise.

The heart is such a powerful place, and God has made it so for a reason. It is the heart that is the link between the soul and the body. Whatever comes to the heart can affect both the soul and the body; this is the kind of power the heart controls.

Jesus said:

“A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart brings forth evil. For out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.”

  • Luke 6:45 NKJV

It is out of our hearts that either good things which we have stored are let out from, or if we have otherwise, it is also manifested.

If we speak good things to people and our communication is edifying to all that hear, then it didn’t happen by mistake. It takes a careful constructing and programming of the heart before men speak what is in it. So, when you hear men speak all manner of vain things and unedifying words, know that their hearts are full of error and ignorance. Vain things are not only vulgar or dirty words, but are also any communications or declarations that negate the Word of God. For example, if God has said you are blessed, and you doubt and declare otherwise, then that is a vain or evil communication.

Here is what the Psalmist says:

“Your word I have hidden in my heart, that I might not sin against You.”

  • Psalms 91:11 NKJV

The word of God is the only defense we can set-up in our hearts against the things that do not exalt God. Knowing what God has said, and sticking to it is a formidable system of defense. If you want to guard your heart, then there is no better way than to have the unbending, ever-surpassing word of God in your heart.

The entrance of His word into our hearts gives us the light of God, which covers it from the entrance of evil and darkness. Let the word of God dwell richly in your heart, and you would have done well in guarding it from all darkness and filth.
